This presentation explores the physics of twisting through engaging kinesthetic and visual-spatial demonstrations – no mathematics required! We will dispel common misconceptions about the mechanics of twisting and provide fundamental insights into how to teach and execute twisting safely and effectively. The session will cover the different types of twisting, including their physical characteristics, how to identify which type a gymnast is using, their limitations, and potential hazards. It will also explore the question of which type of twisting is considered “correct.” The presentation will introduce kinesthetic and visual-spatial mnemonic devices to support better understanding and instruction. We will identify possible errors in our current approaches to teaching and performing twisting and, if time permits, the lecture will conclude with a discussion of drills designed to help gymnasts master specific types of twisting both generally and across multiple events.
In this lecture, we will explore a series of drills for Xcel gymnasts (nominally Gold, Platinum, and Diamond levels) who are ready to progress beyond front handspring and half-on vaults but are not ready for more advanced Tsukahara and Yurchenko vaults. The session will focus on two key vault progressions:
If time allows, we will also cover Yurchenko timers with a half-on and full-off twist. By the end of the lecture, coaches will leave with a toolbox of drills designed to improve gymnasts’ late tilt twisting technique in the second flight of their vaults, ultimately enhancing both performance and safety during execution.
