I started my business in 1973. For the first 7 years—like many small business folks—I was burdened with urgencies, emergencies and long work weeks. I came dangerously close to permanently burning out. Fortunately, about 1980 I learned the importance of a written organizational strategy; a carefully designed matrix of the positions required to fulfill my company’s brand promise, along with the specific responsibilities each position-holder must fulfill to deliver on it.
I also learned how to delegate effectively by honoring all three legs of the delegation stool: (1) clearly and powerfully communicating RESPONSIBILITIES; (2) granting the AUTHORITY needed to fulfill them; and (3) holding each person ACCOUNTABLE for results.
