Developing the Handstand and Cartwheel
Handstands can be challenging for children, and learning cartwheels adds another layer of complexity. Understanding and correcting the difficulties children face in these skills—especially since a handstand goes upside down and a cartwheel moves up side down and sideways—requires attention and patience.
Parents sometimes feel anxious if their child does not master these skills quickly. It is essential to encourage patience throughout the learning process and set realistic expectations. Guiding both the student and the parents helps build confidence—not only in the child’s abilities but also in you as an instructor.

Hands-on Spotting: Recreational Skills
Guided hands-on spotting practice. Gain practical experience in safely and effectively spotting a range of foundational gymnastics skills under the guidance of an experienced spotter. Ideal for coaches working with recreational-level gymnasts.
Vault: basic vaulting skills
Uneven Bars: Pullovers, Back Hip Circles, Swings and Regrips, Squat-Ons
Balance Beam: Handstands, Cartwheels
Floor: Cartwheels, Back Walkovers, Front Walkovers, Backward Rolls, Handstands, Back Handsprings

Session attendees aged 18+ must be U110 SafeSport Trained to participate in hands-on spotting activities.

Balancing without the Beam: A Creative Approach to Beam Work
The balance beam is a crucial part of our sport, but it can become a major roadblock in a developmental program. I’ve seen programs across the country rush to put children on the beam too quickly and at too much height.
In the past, I’ve emphsized a creative approach to balance beam work, which is valid. However, this session will focus on exploring all the opportunities and alternatives to developing balance before introducing students to the beam.
